4 titles, 4 different winners at British Esports Student Champs 24

9 July 2024

The student population in the United Kingdom plays a key role in the evolution of esports in the UK. Generally, and especially when it comes to technology and gaming, it’s the younger people who are more savvy and more knowledgeable, and who drive mainstream adoption on the longer term. It looks like this is what has been happening with esports in the UK as well over the past few years. Just recently, for example, Coleg Cambria won the coveted Spring Cup and unveiled a brand-new esports arena all at once.

Another great example of the above is the British Esports Student Champs, the national esports championship for students in the United Kingdom, organised by British Esports. The 2024 edition of the event took place over the weekend of July 6th and 7th, and consisted of four titles: League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League and VALORANT. And the best thing of all? Each of the four titles brought us a different student champ.

League of Legends

On Saturday, the British Esports Student Champs 24 League of Legends final went down between the CONEL Cyphers from the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London, and the Belfast Met College Buffalos. It ended in a clean sweep for the first, who displayed dominance from start to end. Game one took just 20 minutes and saw the Cyphers build up a gold lead of almost 20k on top of their 29-5 score. The Buffalos showed some resilience in game two, but it wasn’t to be for the Northern Irish team, so the CONEL Cyphers crowned themselves champions.

Overwatch

The British Esports Student Champs 24 Overwatch ended in English delight as Odyssey.exe from Exeter College clinched the victory in the final. They played against the Confetti Arrows (from the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies in Nottingham) in what turned out to be a one-sided affair. Odyssey.exe won the game 4-0 and their player Clique won the Alienware MVP.

Rocket League

Exeter College, with their Eagles.exe, also reached the final of the British Esports Student Champs 24 Rocket League final, where they faced the NCL Vikings from Newcastle College. The two sides made it a thrilling closure of the tournament that ended in a 4-2 victory for the Vikings. Newcastle’s Dom also won the Alienware MVP in the final.

VALORANT

Exeter wasn’t the only college to reach the final in two different titles, because the CONEL Cyphers (from the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London) managed to do so as well. Where Exeter made it to the Rocket League final and the Rocket League final, the Cyphers reached the final battle in both League of Legends and VALORANT.
For a while, it looked like the Cyphers were going to win the VALORANT final after making the League of Legends final earlier, as they won map one (Louts). Their opponents, the Burnley FC Bees from Burnley College, did not give up though, and won the second map (Bind). Map three (Ascent) ended up being a real thriller with the Bees coming out of it as champions.
