Cornwall College Group dominates British Esports Championships

20 February 2024

Just last week, York College grabbed more than a few esports headlines after winning the Esports @ Bett Student Championships 2024 and deservedly so. They managed to win the live Rocket League tournament that was organised for students from the UK as part of Bett UK 2024. Once again, proof that schools and colleges are key to the development of esports in the UK at a grassroots level.

Another school that recently managed to get into the esports spotlights in the UK is The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), thanks to their dominant displays during the recent British Esports Championships. Two of the college’s campuses, Camborne and St. Austell, clinched victories across various esports titles, while playing as the Camborne Krakens and the St. Austell Serpents, respectively.

Hat-trick of victories

In total, The Cornwall College Group managed to bring home three victories from the British Esports Championships. While the St. Austell Serpents came out on top in the Overwatch 2 event, where they beat South Gloucester College in the final, the Camborne Krakens took it a step further and grabbed two trophies, for Rocket League and Valorant. The Rocket League final between TCCG and HSDC Alton College, which the former won by 3 to 1, was even broadcast live by the British Esports Federation.

“Being spoken about in a professional setting during the championships has made the team feel electric”, said Callum Wood, captain of the TCCG Rocket League team, after the tournament, “Our Valorant team staged a remarkable comeback from being 2-8 down to win 13-11 in a tightly contested game. The Rocket League Team is eagerly looking ahead to next year as it prepares to enter the national competition, a higher tier of competitive gaming.”

Campus of the future

The dominant display of the Cornwall esports teams during the recent British Esports Championships wasn’t entirely expected, but it does emphasize the TCCG’s focus on esports as a key part of modern education. Besides esports in the UK encouraging a sense of community amongst students, they are also becoming part of the curriculum at more and more colleges in the United Kingdom.

One of the colleges who are betting big on esports is The Cornwall College Group with its eight campuses in total, Camborne and St. Austell being two of them. The success of these two campuses showcases the talent and dedication of its students, while also highlighting the school’s commitment to providing opportunities that extend beyond traditional academic paths.

“Having our own Esports Team is extremely important for the College, serving as a catalyst to unite diverse groups of learners with shared ambitions and goals”, says David Atkinson-Beaumont, head of the TCCG St. Austell campus, “It amplifies our commitment to nurturing dynamic and diverse communities that thrive on shared passion and achievement.
