Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity looking to hire gamer
14 July 2026
Education, sports training, actual gaming, even the military. In the past few years, esports in the UK have far outgrown their own sector in terms of usefulness and compatibility. More and more companies and industries are realising the potential added value of esports training as formal esports education is starting to be more recognised throughout the business world.
And now, esports and gaming are starting to make their entry into the medical world as well. Or at least into the medical-adjacent world, because the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity is hiring a professional gamer to help entertain patients. The so-called Gamer-in-Residence will focus on delivery on holding gaming sessions and organising all kinds of activities for the roughly 500 patients at the hospital every day.
Entertainment role
Looking at the description of the Gamer-in-Residence on LinkedIn, the Charity is looking for an all-round gamer with experience in organising and supporting activities, sessions and events for children and young people. It mentions “multiple brands of games console”, which suggests the ideal candidate should have experience with both PlayStation and Xbox, as well as possibly computer. The job description also mentions experience with VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality), and with digital play involving younger children.
“The Gamer in Residence at Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity supports the delivery of these engaging, high-quality activities for children, young people and families receiving care at the Royal Hospital for Children, and associated sites”, writes the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, “This is a full-time, entry-level role within the Charity Impact Team, with flexible working hours and weekend working. The role supports the delivery of gaming sessions, play activities and hospital events, helping to create positive experiences for children and families during their time in hospital. You will also contribute ideas and support the testing of new approaches to hospital activities.”
£ 24.500 salary
The description of the Gamer-in-Residence role also mentions a starting salary and a contract duration. According to the provided information, the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity will be paying their new team member a gross salary of £ 24.500 per year on a fixed-term contract for twelve (12) months. There is no explicit mention of a potential extension, but we would not be surprised for it to be an option in case the first twelve month yield good results. It does sound like a dream job for gaming and esports enthusiasts living in the region of the hospital.

The addition of a Gamer-in-Residence is the latest of the Charity’s efforts to entertain the many patients at its hospital. It will be very interesting to see who will land the position in the end and how he or she will fulfil her duties at the Charity.
“For 25 years, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity has championed fun in our city’s children’s hospital”, writes the charity, “Beginning with support for the former Yorkhill hospital, the charity now delivers a wealth of activity at the Royal Hospital for Children. Our year-round portfolio of regular entertainers includes special visits, from sports teams to Santa Claus, and a UK-leading gaming service designed to help the 500+ children and young people treated at the hospital every day.”
