London's O2 Arena announced as host of 2024 League of Legends World Championship final

27 November 2023

We probably don’t need to tell you this, especially not if you are an avid followed of League of Legends, but the annual World Championship is the highly anticipated conclusion of every League of Legends season. The 2023 League of Legends World Championship, which is often also referred to as simply “Worlds”, was held in South Korea from October 10th to November 19th, and now Riot Games have announced the location for the 2024 edition of the event. The Finals will be played on November 2nd, which is earlier than this year, and take place at the O2 Arena in London, in the United Kingdom. This also seems to confirm that the whole World Championship will take place in the United Kingdom or perhaps Europe, though this has not been confirmed yet by the organisation.

Great year for League of Legends in the UK

2023 has been a great year for fans of League of Legends and esports in the UK in general, as it’s not the first major League of Legends event to come the United Kingdom of late. Earlier this year, the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational was held in London as well, at the Copper Box Arena. The event drew large crowds and lots of fans tuned in online as well to follow the action, to such an extent Riot Games, the developer behind League of Legends, has decided to bring the Worlds 2024 to the British capital as well.
“We’re thrilled to bring the World Final to the UK for the first time,” said Naz Aletaha, Global Head of League of Legends Esports, “Worlds is a global celebration of the best of League of Legends, and London’s rich history and modern metropolis is a perfect backdrop for the biggest stage in our sport. We were blown away by the passion and energy from fans in London throughout the 2023 Mid-Season Invitational, and we’re eager to welcome them to the O2 where our finalists will take the same stage as the many icons who preceded them.”

Capacity for 20.000 live spectators

Where the Copper Box Arena has a capacity for about 7.000 people, the O2 Arena fits up to 20.000 people. Therefore, you can expect an even bigger and more spectacular event for the Worlds 2024. The LoL World Championship finals are expected to draw a large crowd and thousands of people are expected to tune in from home on top of that.
“London is a leading destination for esports, and it’s fantastic that we will host the League of Legends World Championship Finals next year,” said Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, in a recent reaction to the Riot Games announcement, “It will bring together esports fans from across the globe and also showcase our capital’s cutting-edge gaming industry. I will continue to do all I can to support esports development and growth in London, as we build a better London for everyone”.
