NUEL cancels University Esports UK Spring season 2026
17 March 2026
If you follow esports in the UK even just a little bit, chances are that you have heard of the National University Esports League, often referred to as simply NUEL. They are one of the biggest university esports organisers in the world and they generally come into the (esports) news with positive announcement and developments. This time, though, not so much, as the organisation recently announced that the 2026 Spring season of the University Esports League has been cancelled.
Financial issues
While the communication surrounding the announcement has not been overly detailed, NUEL has informed the community that financial issues form the base of the decision. The type and extent of the issues have not been explained, but it seems to be related to sponsoring. Or better said, the lack of sponsoring for the University Esports UK Spring season 2026. The decision to cancel nonetheless only concerns the Spring season and the series might well return again later this year.
“It is with great sadness that I’m announcing that NUEL will not be running a Spring season of University Esports this year”, wrote David Marcus-Jackson, Managing Director at NUEL, in the official University Esports UK & Ireland Discord channel, “[…] We will continue to post relevant updates here, and will stay in touch with your society leaders about any future university activities we plan to run. The esports industry is in a challenging place right now, particularly for competitions like ours that rely heavily on sponsorship. Sadly we’ve reached a point where, for now, it’s not possible for us to run university esports sustainably.”
Trailblazer in UK esports
The news of the cancellation of the University Esports UK Spring season is disappointing and a big hit for student esports in the UK, especially because of NUEL’s reputation. The organisation was founded all the way back in 2010, in a time when esports in the UK were still much more outside of the mainstream than they are today.
Providing opportunities for students to get involved in esports in the UK did not immediately prove to be a winning business model. The founders of NUEL persevered though, and in 2023 they were bought by Spanish esports event organiser GGTech for an undisclosed amount. Nowadays, NUEL is one of the leading student esports providers in the region and a major rival of British Esports Federation-owned National Student Esports.
Other NUEL events
As one of the leading bodies for student esports in the UK, NUEL organises more than just the University Esports Championship. They either organise or support a host of other esports events and tournaments as well, all of which are confirmed to be part of the NUEL portfolio. The most notable of these events include:
- Riot Play Club: the community programme by publisher Riot Games (League of Legends, VALORANT, etc…) in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
- Teamfight Tactics Northern Legends: the official Teamfight Tactics community for Northern Europe.
- UKEL League of Legends: grassroots LoL event as part of the UK Esports League.
- VALORANT UK Circuit: the official grassroots UK VALORANT tournament series and community.
