When it comes to esports in the UK, places like London and Birmingham often come up, as those cities are evolving into esports and gaming hubs in the region. There is more to esports in the UK though, a lot more, which is why we always try cover developments in other places as well. The recent opening of the state-of-the-art North Wales Esports Arena is a great example of that. The even more recent launch of Scottish Esports, as new national body for esports in Scotland, is another.
National body for esports in Scotland
In a great step forward for the world of esports in Scotland (and the rest of the United Kingdom), Scottish Esports has officially been launched and presented as the new national body for esports in Scotland. The organisation, which has been registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC, or a special type of limited company which exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders), was founded by Mark McCready, who previously worked as the Scottish Liaison Officer at the British Esports Federation, Dale Murray of the Scottish Esports Network, and Assad “Suleymon” Suliman, who is currently also active as pro Street Fighter player for Guild Esports.
“[Our mission is to] support the development of Scottish Esports by building a community of passionate stakeholders”, Scottish Esports writes on their own website”, To increase the awareness of esports initiatives and opportunities nationally. To facilitate discussion and collaboration to encourage growth and sustainability of our ecosystem for years to come […] To provide representation of grassroots and national esports interests as the national body of esports in Scotland. To provide information and guidance on national strategy and development of Scottish Esports.”
Building a community
As you can expect, Scottish Esports was set up to take esports in Scotland to the next level, but that is not all. The organisation also wants to become a reference for anyone who is expressing an interest in the esports and gaming industries, and who is looking for a community. They will host online session as well as offline activities to encourage the development of a national esports club framework.
On top of that, Scottish Esports will be the coordinator for the activities of all national esports teams. This way, they want to position Scotland as a leader in developing a sustainable esports industry. To do so, Scottish Esports will also collaborate with businesses, educational institutes and other key stakeholders, in order to create a reach that goes further than simply gaming.
“We’re not only building a strong and passionate foundation for competitive video gaming in Scotland – we’re building a community”, says Mark McCready, CEO at Scottish Esports, “By delivering national-scale stability, we’re committed to creating a welcoming, safe, and inclusive space where players and teams of all levels can thrive and feel supported. It’s an exciting time for us all to inspire the next generation to learn and explore esports in a more encouraging and positive environment.”
