Sunderland finally inaugurates brand-new British Arena

20 October 2026

At Legal Esports UK, we like to stay on top of developments within the world of esports in the UK. So, when back in 2023, the Sunderland City Council formally approved the plans for the construction of a landmark esports arena, we were one of the first to report on it. And now, a little over three years later, the brand-new venue has officially opened its doors. It did so by organising a private military gaming event, called the International Defence of Esport Games, which showed off just what the arena is capable of.

Sunderland esports hub

As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait, and it could not ring truer for the recently inaugurated British Arena in Sunderland. It took several years to turn the site of a former Audi car dealership into one of the United Kingdom’s most impressive and state-of-the-art esports facilities, but it was worth the wait. The new arena is situated right across from Sunderland AFC’s iconic Stadium of Light, and features a 200-seat theatre, a 17-meter-wide LED screen, performance rooms as well as retail and hospitality facilities.

“Korea and Saudi Arabia have a similar set up to what we've got but that's it, so we're hoping this is going to be a huge showcase of what the UK can do”, says Chester King, president of British Esports, in reaction to the opening of the British Arena, “We talk about it [esports] being the biggest niche that no one's heard of, but I think if you add up all the different titles, you've got billions of people playing but also watching as well.2

More than esports

While esports and especially esports in the UK play a central role at the British Arena, the venue will not only be used to host esports events and tournaments. Its facilities also allow training and analysis at the very highest level, and not just for (prospective) players. The UK’s newest esports arena was also designed to support careers in related and adjacent sectors and industries, including coaching, production and broadcasting. Over the coming years, it needs to become an integral part of Sunderland’s modern digital infrastructure.
“When I met the City Council and heard their ambition to make it the most digital city in the country - it just felt that it was the right time”, adds King.

Wider impact

The expectation is that the impact of the opening of Sunderland’s British Arena will stretch far beyond esports in the UK as well. Part of the reason behind the City Council’s OK for the construction plans is the goal of having the venue add considerably to the city’s wider sporting reputation. British Esports, for example, already stated that they hope that the arena will attract major competitions and visitors, which will inevitably boost business across the city.

"It's brilliant for Sunderland. It's added to the sporting heritage of the city - it's a world-class facility”, says James Jackson, Sunderland Reform Councillor, “There aren't many places in the world that can do this and it's something we can really, really build on."
