TCL World Esports Championship coming to University of Warwick

TCL World Esports Championship coming to University of Warwick

16 October 2024

Since a few years now, the University of Warwick has been making name as one of the growing hubs for esports in the UK. Back in 2022, the institute was even named UK Esports University of the Year by National Student Esports (NSE) and now, a bit more than two years later, they find themselves at the centre of exciting UK esports news once again. That’s because it has been announced that the University of Warwick will be hosting the upcoming TCL World Esports Championship on October 26th, 2024.

FC25 University Tournament

For those who are not familiar with them yet, TCL is a Chinese electronics company with headquarters in Hong Kong and an incorporation at the Cayman Islands. For the past three years, they have been organising the TCL World Esports Championship and this year will be the first time that part of the event is played outside of China. The first two seasons took place entirely in China, where TCL is heavily involved in the development of a local esports culture and community.

This year will be the first year that the TCL World Esports Championship features not only different countries, but different titles as well. The VALORANT part of the event will take place in Vietnam, the League of Legends event and the TFT event are played in China, and the University of Warwick will be the backdrop for the FC25 event. FC25 is the newest football game title by EA Sports, after the developer halted its partnership with FIFA.

"This tournament is a great opportunity for young people to embrace the world of esports while offering students a chance to compete on a national stage”, says Mike McLaughlin, Business Development Manager at Warwick Esports Centre, “Our partnership with TCL reflects our commitment to promoting innovation and creating exciting esports events for the next generation."

Internal competition at Warwick University

Since the beginning, TCL has focused on students for their esports events and promotions, and the Esports World Championship 2024 is no different. For the FC25 tournament in the UK, for example, every university or college can organise their own internal competition to decide who is their best player. The winners of these internal competitions progress to the national final, which is played online at the University of Warwick. The eventual champion will receive £ 1.000 in prize money plus a brand-new TCL television.

As a global company, TCL’s Global University Esports Championship is all about empowering young people with the very tech that enables players to feel the intensity of the action as if they were right in the game”, says Sharing Xiao, Country Manager at TCL UK/Ireland, “We’re excited to inspire greatness by playing alongside the next generation, recognising their unique abilities, and opening doors for them to succeed. Through this tournament we are excited to co-create diverse possibilities with young gamers, helping them realise their potential in a way that reflects both their aspirations and our brand’s values.”
