Tundra Esports wins BLAST Slam II in Copenhagen

Our focus is always on esports in the UK, so as part of that, we try to follow the adventures and exploits of all of the active UK organisations, both in the United Kingdom itself and in Europe. That’s why today, Tundra Esports is in the spotlight. The London-based collective travelled to Copenhagen earlier this month to compete at BLAST Slam II, which they eventually won. Their victory meant the UK organisation’s second Tier 1 tournament victory on a row, after having conquered FISSURE PLAYGROUND #1 a few days earlier.

Tundra Esports on fire

Tundra Esports, at the moment of writing, is one of the strongest Dota 2 teams out there. Their victory at BLAST Slam II in Copenhagen, where they beat Canadian esports organisation Gaimin Gladiators 3-0 in the Grand Final, only confirmed that. A total of ten teams competed for the BLAST Slam II:

BetBoom Team

Team Falcons

Gaimin Gladiators

Team Liquid

Nixma Galaxy

Tundra Esports

Parivision

Xtreme Gaming

Talon Esports

Yakult Brothers

As usual, the tournament started with two groups and Tundra Esports was placed in Group A, together with other big names like Team Liquid and Talon Esports. The Brits managed an impressive 3 victories and just 1 defeat, against Team Liquid, to finish first of their group. This meant that they would enter the subsequent Playoffs at the Semifinal stage, where they faced Nigma Galaxy. The organisation from the United Arab Emirates was not up to the challenge though, as they fell 2-1 to Tundra.

Next up was the Grand Final, where Group B winners Gaimin Gladiators were waiting after eliminating Team Falcons in their Semifinal. Tundra Esports just proved to be a bridge too far fro their Canadian opponents, as they finished the final with relative ease. None of the battles lasted longer than 40 minutes and all three of them were won by the Brits.

$ 1 million prize pool

Their victory at BLAST Slam II brought Tundra Esports a fantastic $ 400.000 in cash: $ 300.000 prize money plus $ 100.000 in team earnings. That comes down to about £ 321.970 at the moment of writing. In total, BLAST had reserved no less than a million dollars for the total prize pool of the tournament. That’s how runners-up Gaimin Gladiators still managed to go home with $ 200.000 ($ 150.000 in prize money plus $ 50.000 in team earnings), for example. The number three (Nigma Galaxy) and four (Team Falcons) each won $ 80.000, consisting of $ 60.000 worth of prize money and $ 20.000 worth of team earnings.

“This approach enables a more sustainable prize pool distribution, ensuring all participating teams receive a share”, BLAST explained with regard to the prize pool structure and distribution for BLAST Slam II, “$250,000 will be awarded to teams based on their performance during the Slam events. This step will ensure that more investments are made in teams through the split rather than the tournament being solely focused on the prize pool.”
