One of the saddest stories from the past football season was undoubtedly the sudden passing of Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother as the result of a car crash. And even now, more than half a year later, Liverpool and the Portuguese national team are still reeling from Jota’s tragic story. That is why it is fantastic to see how his spirit lives on, both in his family and friends, and in the sports and the UK esports worlds as well.

Recently, for example, his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers teamed up with Portuguese esports organisation Luna Esports, which was originally founded as Diogo Jota Esports by Diogo Jota himself, back in 2020. With the help of Luna Esports, Wolves are currently competing in the ePremier League 2026, where they are waiting to know their opponent in the coming Round 3 of the Playoffs.

Wolves x Luna Esports

Luna Esports features Diogo “Diogo” Mendes and Gonçalo “RastaArtur” Pinto in their EA FC team, and both of them are representing Wolves in the current ePremier League. Pinto made his debut in the competition earlier this season and together with Diogo he immediately made it to the Playoff stage. They finished second in a group with Leeds United, Liverpool, Burnley and Bournemouth, and will now be facing one of Everton, Fulham or Newcastle in Round 3 of the Playoffs.

“Representing Wolves is truly special for us”, says Armando Vale, General Manager at Luna Esports, “This partnership goes beyond simply competing in the ePL. It connects us to one of the best leagues in the world and gives us great motivation, knowing this was Diogo Jota’s first club in England and also marks our very first participation in the ePL. Wolves was a beautiful chapter in his life and in his family’s story, and we’re proud to do something that we know would make him really happy. I’d like to thank Wolves for being so open and supportive of this idea from the very beginning, and I sincerely hope we can represent the club in the best possible way.”

Portuguese connection

In the past few years, Wolves have built up a strong connection with Portugal and Portuguese football, in part thanks to super agent Jorge Mendes. Plenty of Portuguese stars have worn the orange shirt since then, with Diogo Jota being one of the most illustrious names. Because of this recent history, it is no surprise that Wolves have chosen Luna Esports as their partner for the current season of the ePremier League.

“It feels great to be back competing in the ePL after two seasons away”, says Diogo Mendes, “The level of competition keeps getting tougher every year, so I’m focused on returning in the best way possible. Teaming up with Rasta adds extra motivation, and being part of a club with such a strong Portuguese identity makes this opportunity even more special. There’s also a meaningful connection to Diogo Jota’s esports team, Luna Esports, which makes representing Wolves this year truly significant for all of us involved.”
