Back in the summer of 2023, we were one of the first platforms to report about the plans for the construction of a then-brand-new esports arena in Sunderland. At the time, we wrote an article about this major milestone project for esports in the UK and now, about 2,5 years later, British Esports has revealed the first images of the new venue. It is set to operate under the name “British Arena”, with a main stage area with space for up to 400 people and the plan to officially open its doors this summer.
Construction under way
For the recent image reveal, British Esports have launched a completely new website for the British Arena itself. In addition to the renders of the project and the images of the progress, it also offers the story behind the venue and the purpose for its construction. You can also check out the “Events” page already, which functions as a kind of calendar for the British Arena.
“There’s been a real rise in excitement as the British Arena takes shape and the world can see its development is underway”, says Dave Martin, Senior Vice President at British Esports, “We’ve been meeting all kinds of people and businesses who want to get involved and we’re hugely optimistic about the potential of this venue. With building works progressing nicely, we have a few design concept images to share, which help bring the arena to life to help potential partners understand what it’s all about. Several exciting conversations are underway in what is arguably the biggest thing we’ve done to date. We can’t wait to share more with you.”
British Arena
As we wrote before, the British Arena main stage area will have space for up to 400 people standing, or up to 200 seated visitors. The eyecatcher is definitely the 17-meter LED screen with full 5G and broadcasting capabilities, supported by various broadcast, content and editing studios. The Arena will also feature performance rooms and an expansive 550 square meter secure outdoor activation space, with a private 2,000 square meter car park. The cherry op top is the lounge and bar space, which has capacity for 350 standing guests, including an arcade zone.
“The arena will be a fantastic addition to Sheepfolds, which is transforming thanks to developments like the Stables and the new Housing Innovation & Construction Skills Academy, and with much more to come”, says Peter McIntyre, Executive Director of Economy & Place at Sunderland City Council, “Sunderland is an exciting place for people to live, work and play, and – with this new addition – the future looks even brighter.”
Centrepiece
Sunderland has been presenting itself as a major new hub for esports in the UK over the past few years. The construction of the British Arena fits into that ambition perfectly, as it will allow the city (and the region as a whole) to attract much more attention from both international and UK esports. As Andy Payne, chairman of British Esports, puts it: “We have designed our facility so that on any given day we could be a training and performance hub, running a global esports tournament, hosting a publisher game launch or hired out as a music venue”.
