British Esports announces new student PUBG Mobile tournament

17 September 2024

Lately, the good news just keeps coming for fans of esports in the UK. Just a few days ago, League of Legends and VALORANT developer Riot Games announced their brand-new Riot Play Club and announced the United Kingdom (and Ireland) as one of the first regions where the initiative will be launched, and now British Esports has made the next big announcement. The national body for esports in the UK will soon start with a new PUBG Mobile tournament for UK students, in collaboration with developers Tencent Games and Krafton. Registration for the new event is already open and the start of its first edition is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th, 2024.

PUBG Mobile tournament exclusively for UK students

The new tournament, which has not been given an official name yet, is far from the first official collaboration between the British Esports Federation and Tencent Games. Earlier this year, for example, the two parties organised career case studies with Tencent’s Level Infinite. It also highlights British Esports’ focus on students in the UK region, as the federation has is also the brains behind the hugely popular British Esports Students Championships.

As for the upcoming new PUBG Mobile student tournament, there will be a total of sixteen teams competing for the title. While there has been no announcement of prize money yet, we are sure there will be a prize pool as well to make things even more interesting and that’s not all. We do already know, after all, that the overall winners of the new tournament will get the opportunity to play live on stage at the 2024 PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC) grand finals, which are set to take place at the ExCel Auditorium in London from December 6th to December 8th, 2024.

“We’re thrilled to offer a first-of-its-kind mobile esports tournament for further education colleges, and to continue building our relationship with industry leaders Tencent”, says Tom Dore, Vice President at British Esports, “We look forward to discovering which winning team of students will compete on the biggest stage at the PUBG Mobile Global Championship in London at the end of the year.”

Familiar format

As for the format of the new PUBG Mobile student championship, British Esports and Tencent Games have opted for a familiar format. From October 8th to November 12th, the teams will be competing to finish as high up on the overall leaderboard as they can. In those roughly four weeks of esports actions, each team will play a total of 12 maps.

“As esports continues to flourish in the UK, we’re excited to collaborate with British Esports to inspire and connect the next generation of players”, says James Yang from Tencent Games Global, “With PUBG Mobile being one of the world’s leading mobile games, hosting PUBG Mobile Global Championship in the UK highlights the growing potential of the UK esports scene. Our partnership will pave the way for aspiring players to advance from amateur to professional, with the opportunity to compete on the world stage. It also reflects our commitment to support and nurture the growth of the UK esports industry.”
