Brütal Legend honours Ozzy Osbourne with free downloads
29 July 2025
When we talk about esports in the UK, Brütal Legend is rarely the first name to pop up. In recent days though, the action-adventure game has garnered some attention, thanks to their tribute Ozzy Osbourne. The British heavy metal legend passed away at age 76 on Tuesday, July 22nd 2025, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. In honour of Ozzy, Double Fine, the creators of Brütal Legend, made the game free to play for 666 minutes at midnight on July 24th.
Brütal Legend
Before we go into Double Fine’s tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, we will quickly introduce their flagship game, Brütal Legend. While the game is especially popular amongst lovers of gaming and music, and in particular heavy metal, it is nowhere near as known as big esports titles like Counter-Strike or Fortnite, for example. Instead, it has gained something of a cult classic status in the gaming world.
Brütal Legend is a third-person action-adventure game with various real-time strategy game elements that was created by Double Fine, an American studio based in San Francisco. The game revolves around Eddie Riggs, a fictional roadie who travels through a fantasy world inspired by the artwork of famous heavy metal covers. His objective, as the new saviour of the human race, is to fight the supernatural overlords with his magical Gibson Flying V guitar. He does so through single player Battle Stages and multiplayer sequences where the player commands vast amounts of troops.
666 minutes of free downloads
As one of the biggest names in heavy metal, Ozzy Osbourne appears in Brütal Legend and even voices his own character. It is therefore no surprise that Double Fine wanted to do something special for the musical legend after his passing on July 22nd and that is exactly what they did. On July 24th at 1AM (GMT-7, San Francisco time), they made Brütal Legend free for downloading for 666 minutes. During that time, anyone with access to gaming platform Steam could download the game entirely for free.
“To honor Ozzy’s larger-than-life rock and roll legacy, we’re making Brütal Legend *FREE* on itch.io”, Double Fine wrote on their own X account, “But this incredible deal will only last for 666 minutes, as the prophecy foretold. So get yourself clicking, before it disappears like a demon in the night.”
Ozzy Osbourne in Brütal Legend
As we wrote before, Ozzy Osbourne has his own character in Brütal Legend, but it is not himself. Instead, he plays the famed Guardian of Metal, an immortal character who is a keeper of secrets. In the game, this character is also the source for some unique weapon upgrades. On top of that, Ozzy has even contributed to the game’s soundtrack, which emphasises his status as a true heavy metal symbol. The Prince of Darkness, as he called himself, was joined in the both the game and on the soundtrack by a host of other rock and roll and heavy metals giants, including Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Mötorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister and The Runaways’ Lita Ford.
