Dundee and Angus College student wins back-to-back EAFC Cups
2 June 2026
Student esports is one of the fastest-growing segments of broader esports in the UK, with more and more companies and organisations getting involved in teams, academies and events. The 2026 EAFC Spring Cup by British Esports is an excellent example of that and we did not pick it randomly. Recently, Tony Gowans from Dundee and Angus College (Scotland) made history by winning his second Student Champs EAFC Cup in a row. After winning the Winter Cup a few months ago, the Scot recently clinched the EAFC Spring Cup, beating New College Durham in the final.
Flawless to the final
The DA Dragons, as the Dundee and Angus College EA FC team if officially called, were unbeatable this Spring season. Quite literally, because their real-life representative, Tony Gowans, did not lose a single match on the road to the big final. He faced eight of the best student EA FC players in the UK on his way, each played in a best-of-3 format and each won 2-0 by Gowans. It was only in the final that his opponent, NCD – Swift Blade from New College Durham, managed to nick a game.
Back-to-back champion
Gowans’ performance for Dundee and Angus College was not surprising, at least not to those who follow UK esports and especially student esports in the UK. The young Scotsman has been readily making a new for himself in the UK EA FC scene ever since winning the 2026 Student Champs EAFC Winter Cup a few months ago. He came into the recent Spring Cup as one of the heavy favourites and never shied away from that role. On the contrary, Gowans delivered and turned himself into the first back-to-back Student Champs EAFC Cup winner ever.
“I got involved in the British Esports Student Champs after seeing classmates competing in other game titles, which inspired me to take part too”, said Gowans in a reaction after the big final against New College Durham, “Through my course, I’ve learned about strategy, nutrition, data analysis and performance – all of which have improved my game.”
College esports in the UK
As we mentioned before, college and university esports are growing fast in the United Kingdom, and Dundee and Angus College is a prime example of that. The institute has approached the relatively new industry with a very open minds, which has resulted in the creation of various one-year and two-year courses, including a Foundation Degree of the Arts – Esports and Creative Industries, and a BA (Hons) Top-Up in Esports and Creative Industries. Dundee and Angus College also hosted last year’s “Scottish Esports League 6”at their own dedicated Esports Studios.
“Tony [Gowans] has expanded his expertise far beyond gameplay throughout his studies at Dundee and Angus College”, wrote the college in a statement of the EAFC Spring Cup, “The curriculum has allowed him to explore many different areas of the industry, including a professional understanding of how major esports events are coordinated and promoted. He also found that the Health and Wellbeing modules taught him how to optimise his training routines and prepare for tournaments.”
