Fnatic misses out on Worlds for the first time in a decade

The League of Legends World Championship, often referred to as simply “Worlds”, is one of the biggest events on the calendar for esports in the UK and the rest of the world. It brings together the best nineteen teams in the world to decide who is the very best at the end of each LoL season.
In each of the last ten editions of the League of Legends Worlds, Fnatic was present to defend British honours. The London-based organisation did not miss out on a single edition of the tournament for ten years, but that impressive run has now unfortunately come to an end. After the end of the LEC Summer Split, Fnatic failed to make the playoffs, which means they will not be able to attend the upcoming 2026 Worlds. This marks the first time the UK esports organisation will miss the tournament since 2016.
LEC Summer Split 2026
Every year, the LEC Summer Split delivers three teams for the League of Legends World Championship. The event brings together ten teams from all over the world who first compete in a regular season format. They each play nine matches and the top four gets seeded into the Upper Bracket of the Playoffs. Numbers five and six from the regular season get seeded into the Lower Bracket of the Playoffs.
When the time came for their ninth and final match of the regular season, against GiantX from Spain, Fnatic was battling for that crucial sixth spot. GiantX, meanwhile, were still in contention for a spot in the top four. Unfortunately for Fnatic, this ended in a 2-1 victory for the Spaniards, meaning that the Londoners would be missing out on the LoL World Championship for the first time since 2016.
League of Legends
League of Legends is not the only title in which Fnatic competes, as the organization also boasts a VALORANT team and a Counter-Strike roster for example, but it is kind of their organisation’s flagship brand. They have been active in the competitive LoL scene since 2011 and immediately won the World Championship in that same year. The organisation also won various Splits throughout the years, including LEC Spring and LEC Summer in 2018. Missing out on Worlds 2026 for the first time since 2016 is therefore nothing less than a drama for Fnatic.
Possible sale
With first their VALORANT team failing to progress in the EMEA region this summer and now their League of Legends team out of Worlds 2026, the question is what is next for Fnatic. Especially because rumours about a sale of Fnatic have been circulating for a while now.
“The negotiations for the sale of Fnatic have started”, wrote French esports personality Tom Varizan not so long ago, “The two potential buyers are 2 football clubs, of which one German club. This would explain the current inactivity at Fnatic, as the organisation is busy negotiating the sale of its shares. As a reminder, back at the end of 2025, the organisation was already exploring options of a sale (for around $ 100 million).”
